of people who were directly affected by the killings at sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut. people who had family members killed or friends killed there. and if you are one of those folks, you might not want to watch this story. at the top of the show. i'm sorry to have to say it but i feel it's the only responsible thing to do. now you know. today the "hartford current" newspaper published new details that happened at sandy hook elementary. today marks three months since the massacre of first graders and school staff at that school. the headline in the current today focuses on reports from sources close to the investigation who say that the killer from sandy hook researched other mass murders, including the right wing nationalist attack in norway a couple of years ago. that attack saw eight people killed by explosives and 69 people shot to death, most of them teenagers. but we also now have the most specific information we have ever had about how the sandy hook elementary school massacre happened. the way he got into the school, which was locked, for example, was bullets.

shure. in the 8 days since the tragedy at sandy hook at least 2,605 americans have died as a result of gun violence. that's nearly 30 people a day. even more than were killed on that horrible day in newtown. congress has yet to pass new gun safety legislation. today, however, two pieces of the president's gun legislation did make it out of the senate judiciary committee. universal background checks and a school safety measure. the bill will now move to a full senate vote. one of the organizations demanding congress pass common sense gun legislation is a mixed group of professional, amateur and every day cyclists who road from newtown connecticut, to washington, d.c. there are 26 riders in total one for every child and staff member killed at the elementary school and they call themselves "team 26". imagine if we had a rider for every person killed since newtown, we would have to close off freeways. one of the children who attended sandy hook school joins us tonight. monte frank is the organizer and one of the riders of team 26, and he joins us from washington, d.c. i heard that when

hurricane sandy, severe drought and major flodding are becoming more frequent -- flooding are becoming more frequent and growing more intense. sandy alone caused at least $50 billion in damages, killed dozens of americans and up ended the lives of millions more. but sandy was only one of 11 separate billion-dollar extreme weather events last year. and not only are things getting worse each time, but with these vents they're occurring more frequent now than even a decade ago. and the costs of all these can stast row fees, which are borne by the taxpayers, are escalating. we enacted over $60 billion in emergency aid for all those impacted by sandy. who knows how much the next catastrophe will cost. mr. speaker, we cannot sit back and wait for the next hurricane sandy to devastating american lives and property, especially in these tight america times. i think we can all agree that reducing the costs of extreme weather events is a good idea. and one of the most effective ways to reduce these costs is to plan ahead. regardless of what you think about its causes, extreme weather is happening, and

, not just for the usa but for planet earth. that's the message delivered by hurricane sandy last fall, and by almost all the extreme weather of the past two years. and it's the message from the most informed scientists in the world. they're scared, for real. and they say that unless we slow the release of global emissions from fossil fuels, slow it enough to keep the planet's temperature from rising by 2 degrees celsius, or 3.6 degrees fahrenheit, the earth's polar ice sheets will melt away, with catastrophic consequences. time's running out. recently not one, but two major scientific reports have concluded that the rapid increase in fossil fuel emissions makes that increase of two degrees celsius all but inevitable. this headline in the "national journal" spells it out, "it's already too late to stop climate change." so why isn't this planetary emergency on every politician's mind? why are any of us still silent? those questions prompted me to ask anthony leiserowitz to join me, he's the director of the jail project on climate change communication and a research scientist at yale uni
